Interview by Brandon Davis Photos by Wayne Geist
You’re originally from New York City. How old were you when you moved to Buffalo?
I moved when I was 13. I basically went from living in a hectic and fast city where you find yourself in the center of it all, to a rustbelt city where the pace of life is much slower and the people are [...]

The upstate New York Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Veteran Integrated Service Network, referred to as VISN 2, services Buffalo, Batavia, Bath, Syracuse and Albany, where main medical treatment facilities are located. Smaller outpatient clinics in Rochester, Ithaca and Binghamton bridge the gaps.
In all of VISN 2’s expanse, there is only one creative art therapy program, with only one creative art therapist by the name of Ralph Sirianni. Ralph works [...]

Recreating New Orleans

The streets of New Orleans are lined with inventors. They stroll the sidewalks and parkways, linger in bookstores and back alleys. They are scribes with horns for pens, blasting their sorrow and elation with syncopation. They create for the moment as much as they do for the record.
“Inventors are amazing. New Orleans is famous for its inventors,” says Michael Patrick Welch, an English teacher for Young Audiences Louisiana. In his [...]

Brush to Brick

It is likely that thousands of people drive past the mural recently installed in Richmond, VA’s Southside district, and don’t even realize that lives were changed in the making of it. The high school students who put brush to brick created a 1,800-square foot painting, beautifying a highly visible building in a low-income neighborhood.
They mended the facades of blighted buildings and built bridges between clashed cultures.
“There’s potential for tension,” says Marlene Paul, director of Art180, the [...]

Sharing is Caring

Of the many patients at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Women’s and Children’s Hospital that Barbara Murak has worked with, one particular story resonates with her. It’s that of an elderly couple: a gentleman undergoing cancer treatment, and his doting wife who would sit by his side from 8 in the morning until 8 at night. They held hands.
“She would touch his face with her hands to calm him down, honor his sense of touch,” says Murak. “He [...]

Change in Store

For someone who goes by the nickname “Time,” Marc Gunther is a man who has little need for it.
“I’m a very impatient man. I want things done now,” says Gunther, a model for proactive citizenry in Eugene, OR. He is one of three founders of the Eugene Storefront Art Project, a collection of art-conscious citizens pushing for the installation of public art in the city’s empty storefront windows. He faces opposition from city officials and property owners, but [...]

The Smell of Success

Walter Cronkite almost ruined Chattanooga, TN.
In the summer of 1969, the CBS Evening News anchor declared it the “dirtiest city in America,” creating a public relations crisis. But he wasn’t wrong.
Industrial plants in the iron-rich city produced an overwhelming amount of air pollution that was compounded by the city’s “inverted fog,” a byproduct of the neighboring Lookout Mountain. The geographic anomaly causes foggy air to hang low over the city, suspending any pollution with it. Folklore suggested you [...]

The 24-Hour Transformation

The large unfinished painting on the side of an abandoned building at the corner of Grant and Amherst Streets is a way to tie up a loose end or two. It may not seem so right now, because it’s still in its early rough stages, but Marcus Wise and Marissa Lehner are hoping to plant something that will remind Black Rock residents of their neighborhood’s history.
Wise and Lehner met through Emerging Leaders in the [...]

Art Beyond Gallery Walls

No conversation about community art is complete without mention of the biggest community gathering of art and artists Western New York has seen in recent decades: the regional art biennial known as Beyond/In Western New York.
Originally held in the mid-1960s as simply, Western New York, the juried show evolved into In Western New York in 1977, which abandoned the juried format and featured 72 works by 41 artists, all with local ties. Beyond/In Western [...]

It’s Amore: 37signals

by Block Club Magazine 06.18.2010

It’s a sunny Friday in Buffalo and we’re jamming out to the “spring cleaning” play list on Stereomood. It’s not spring and we’re definitely not cleaning, but the music is perfect for today.

The only thing cooler than this music is the interview I just had with Matt from 37signals. I seriously love what these guys do. Is it possible to have a bromance with another company?  Anyway, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the company, you need to check it out. If you’ve ever been unorganized, forgotten someone’s phone number, or like me, are regularly drowning in a sea of Post-it notes while trying to remember contacts, who to email when and getting work done for clients, 37signals is the company for you. They make really sweet web apps to help people get things done.

Cool Stuff We’re Working On Right Now

by Block Club Magazine 06.11.2010

We’ve pretty much wrapped up the Elmwood Village Map & Guide for 2010/2011.  This is our third time working on the project and we’ve decided to change it up a bit.  We’re hoping that the large map and street guide can be used as a wayfinding system for the street.  It will probably need a few minor tweaks before that happens. I’m digging this format a lot more than the last format.  Should be on the streets in a couple of weeks.
