Where: Photography Gallery. Flower City Arts Center, 713 Monroe Avenue,
Rochester NY 14607

LUZ DEL DÍA: Copyrighting the Light of Day is Stephanie Mercedes’ response to
the Argentine Bill No. 2517-D-2015 that would erase all photographic
remnants of the Dirty War from public access. With this project Mercedes
attempts to preserve the archive by copyrighting "the light of day" of each
image. The exhibition will consist of negatives and altered photographs
displayed on light boxes illustrating the process of preserving the archive.
Primarily a performance artist, Mercedes arrived at Flower City Arts Center with
no previous experience working in a photography darkroom:
It has been a privilege and a honor to join the Flower City Arts Center
community. Not only have they welcomed me and my work with open
arms, but the entire center and their amazing staff's knowledge of film
photography is awe-inspiring. In a few short weeks, with guidance and
access to their facilitates I been able to learn how to process and develop
film, a essential component of my current project and something that
- more -
would have been very difficult without this residency. A project that
seemed almost impossible a few months ago, might actually be realized
and it is all thanks to the support and encouragement of the Flower City
Art Center! Their commitment to the medium of photography and
investment in young artists such as myself has already made a dramatic
difference in my own practice - and I have no doubt they will continue to
support and nurture vital cultural producers to come. — Stephanie
Mercedes, 2017 Artist-in-Residence
Mercedes will be in residence at the Center through April 30th. In addition to
her exhibition LUZ DEL DÍA she is also presenting the Art & Politics Workshop
Series at the Center in March & April. For more information:
