| Awards |
The Catholic Courier and El Mensajero Católico have won hundreds of Catholic Press Association and New York Press Association awards during the past 25 years.
In June of 2009, the Courier earned five additional awards from the Catholic Press Association for work published during 2009.
The CPA, which represents more than 600 Catholic publications in the United States and Canada, presented the awards June 4 during its annual convention in New Orleans, La. Judging was conducted by members of the American Press Institute. The award-winning entries were:
- Best Reporting on Children: Staff writers Jennifer Burke, Mike Latona, Amy Kotlarz and Annette Jiménez were awarded first place for their package of stories in the Courier's annual August "Back to School" issue.
"Well planned and nicely executed back-to-school effort that hits on parents’ key concerns at that moment, from safety to social networking," judges wrote. "Stories are well written and sourced. The stories are packed full of information parents can use, but also are of interest to readers without children in school." - Best Photo Story: Photo Editor Mike Crupi received a first-place award for "Religious Accept God’s ‘Better Offer,'" which depicted a day in the lives of Dominican nuns at Elmira's Monastery of Mary the Queen. The photo story was published in the annual May "Milestones/Vocations" issue.
"The winner shows a clean, well thought-out story showing a small aspect of life as a Nun in a very orderly and deliberate style," the judges wrote. "Story was layed (sic) out so well, so the reader could move through the images. Photographs showed a style the Nuns observed." - Best Online Content Not Published in Print: Second place went to Kotlarz for her stories "Global liturgies pay tribute to Archbishop Sheen, who put Mass in mass media" on Nov. 6 and "Archbishop Sheen remembered at local Mass" on Dec. 7; Burke for her stories "Bishop urges parishioners to take stand on health-care reform" on Nov. 6 and "Catholic Conference hails defeat of same-sex marriage bill" on Dec. 2; and Jiménez for her story "Wayne County residents file complaint against U.S. Border Patrol" on Dec. 18.
"An excellent site, and, to be honest, I could have easily scored it first rather than second," the judge wrote. "This is a comprehensive site that provides lots of choices for the user, with the initial splash page offering plenty to keep someone reading. The stories themselves, a mix of local and wire, are nicely done." - Best Scenic, Still Life or Weather Photo: Crupi received third place for his March commentary-page stand-alone photo of an icy railing behind which a view of downtown Rochester is visible.
"When looking at this image, I can feel how cold it is, but can feel the hope that the sunrise might bring some warmth," the judge wrote." It’s a great weather photo that frames the city well." - Best Reporting on Teenagers: Burke received an honorable mention for her story "Adults Can Help Teens Grieve" from the annual July health edition.
