Unforeseen Structures is artist Mitch Goldstein's examination of emergent form
using darkroom photography techniques, specifically the photogram.
Photograms use no cameras or lenses — instead, objects are placed on or near
unexposed photographic paper and briefly exposed to light. This process
results in abstract black and white compositions, which emerge unpredictably
from the physical materials used in their creation. Goldstein relinquishes
control, relying instead on intuition and chance to allow form and structure to
develop from the process.
“I came across Mitch Goldstein’s photograms on his Instagram feed
(@mgoldst) and immediately contacted him to exhibit here at the Center. This
will be the first time these prints will be exhibited physically and not “liked” on a
screen. As the only community darkroom left in the city it’s important this work
is exhibited here. I’m thrilled to share Unforeseen Structures with our
community, members, and students.” — Megan Charland, Photography
