In 1989 Leith Design Group was formed. For 20 years I have art directed several major trade and consumer publications (including several magazine re-designs), designed for several luxury cruise companies, and numerous clients in all types of media. "By the way, you did a masterful job with the Andrea/Monet brochure. Excellent! Mato thought a shiny cover would be better, but I convinced him that it makes for fingerprints. (The dull satin finish looks much nicer and classier, in my opinion)."

Letter of Recommendation, January 18, 2006
Dear Mr. _____:
The best art director I have ever had the pleasure to work with, Leith Chamberlain, tells me she is being considered by you for a similar position at _______ Magazine. You are most fortunate.

Before retiring three years ago, I was a reporter and editor for 42 years. For more than 20 of those years, I was managing editor and/or editor-in-chief of several publications covering high-tech industries. They included Electronic News and MIS Week, both Fairchild Publications (New York City) weekly news magazines covering the electronics and computer industries; Computer Pictures, then a 55,000 circulation, bi-monthly slick magazine covering computer-based art and graphics; Multimedia Producer, then a 117,000 circulation monthly covering multimedia technologies, and, most recently InTech magazine based here in North Carolina.

During those 20 years, I had the pleasure of working with perhaps 10 or so talented art directors. The best, by far, was Leith Chamberlain. She was my art director during the five years I was editor-in-chief of Computer Pictures, and also art director of Mulitmedia Producer. Both those publications were start-ups, which Leith designed and layed out from the get-go.

Computer Pictures, in particular, is a great example to use when explaining what makes Leith special. First, you need to understand the subject we covered most often in the magazine was art. We published art done by real artists—award-winning artists, internationally known—all of whom did their art on computers. These were also artists with enormous egos, who could not tolerate their work being poorly presented in a magazine layout.

During the five years I worked with Leith, I never received a complaint from any artist regarding Leith's work. They loved her work because every layout was creative and eye-catching. I loved her work for the same reason—plus another we editors understand: she never, ever missed a deadline.

Leith not only brings with her incredible creativity and adherence to deadlines, but also one more talent—great "people chemistry." During the five years I worked with her, Leith was liked and respected by everyone with whom she came in contact—writers, editors, other artists, production staff, our publisher and business staff.

You are very, very fortunate to have the opportunity to consider having such a talent work for you. I recommend her most highly.

Sincerely,
James E. Strothman

NFO—a respected and established U.S. marketing research firm—wanted to send their clients an up-to-the-minute read on global research, innovative research tools, services and expertise in the form of a monthly newletter. Knowledge Industries Publishing, White Plains, NY, came to me with their 64-page magazine looking for a re-design and ongoing art direction. I went on to art direct the magazine for five years until it was sold in 1994. Magazine design is a field I have alot of experience in. Other magazines I have art directed are: Folio Magazine, Catalog Age, Cook's Magazine, Benefits & Compensation Solutions Magazine, Non-Foods Merchandising, Cabling Magazine and CAB Report.

The Siemon Company, an international leader in the development and manufacture of telecommunications cabling systems, wanted an easy-to-understand graphic translation showing their highly technical cabling system as the foundation of a fully integrated voice, imaging and data network. This 12 page capabilities brochure features a 3 page pull-out gatefold showing an illuminated view of their system at work.

Vermont Pure Spring Water Annual Report
Vermont Pure Spring Water Annual Report

This was the year Vermont Pure built their bottling plant in Randolph, VT. They were positioning themselves as the American brand of spring water, direct competitors of Avian from France. My solution was to go Red, White and Blue and use the new building blueprint as a background throughout. The inside back cover has a flap used to hold the annual report itself during AP season, but to hold sales materials throughout the rest of the year, making the presentation multi-purpose.
