State of the City
Rochester Contemporary Art Center August 1 - September 21
Opening Reception: August 1, 6-10pm
Artist Talk: August 2, 1pm (Robert Burley)
Artist Talk: September 6, 1pm (The Avalanche Collective & Ryan Boatright)

State of the City brings together a diverse group of international artists who document and explore Upstate Cities.

Robert Burley’s (Toronto) documentary photographs record the final death of the film-based photographic industry. Burley’s recent work turns his established landscape practice toward a defining moment in the history of photography: the inevitable disappearance of photographic film. Burley meditates on this change at the epicenter, where the industrial behemoths at the heart of film production in Rochester (home of Kodak) and worldwide are currently being razed. The resulting images of dismantled and demolished factories represent significant changes in economy and cityscape, but also offer a strange negative monument to the industry, recorded by its own final product.

The Avalanche Collective’s (Syracuse) performed urban excursions employ the language and tools of a polar expedition as a point of entry to explore and reconsider suburban environments. The familiar grounds of strip-malls become awkward and unfamiliar when visited through the arduous journey contained in the Avalanche Collective’s video installations.

Bingyi Huang’s (Buffalo/ Beijing) installations document and journal her practice of engaging with “abandoned” buildings in the city of Buffalo. Bingyi inhabits derelict homes, visiting their trash heaps for clues to their past lives, often painting their stories back onto the water damaged walls. Her sensitive attention to the buildings (and occasionally, the squatters) generously humanize what many consider “rust-belt” eyesores.

Jim DeLucia’s (Rochester) airy and fractured landscape paintings deploy iconic forms and empty shadows toward a personal navigation of his urban and suburban settings.

Ryan Boatright’s (Rochester) work examines the gray atmosphere surrounding mainstream America and explores the formal commonality of design found in the suburban built environment. His photographs create wilderness out of blacktop cul-de-sacs and cookie cutter architecture.

State of the City exhibition @ Rochester Contemporary Art Center runs from August 1 - September 21, 2008 opening reception August 1 (First Friday) 6-10pm.
