Volunteer Tutor

The Literacy Volunteers of America-Steuben County are seeking a Volunteer Tutor helping a Basic Literacy (those reading below an 8th grade level) or ESOL adult learner improve their reading, writing, and oral English skills.  Will be trained by LVA-SC staff in Basic Literacy Skills and English for Speakers of Other Langugage (ESOL) instruction.  Will prepare and guide weekly (or more) lessons based on learner-defined educational goals.

Interestes/Qualifications:

• An interest in adult education/training, learning disabilities, and literacy theory
• Cultural sensitivity
• 21 years of age or older
• Steuben County, New York resident
• Satisfactory references
• Must complete 15 hour LVA-SC training
• Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel for tutoring
• Must commit to one year or 100 hours of service
