Founded in 1910, the purpose of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens, and as members of their local, national and international communities.

Both boys and girls will learn to build character, increase citizenship, and develop personal fitness through The Seneca Waterways Council.

Excitement awaits for boys and girls in the Counties of Ontario, Wayne, Seneca, Yates, and Monroe as well as the City of Rochester, New York.

There are two camps: the J. Warren Cutler Scout Reservation in Naples, NY; and Massawepie Scout Camps in the Adirondacks near Tupper Lake, NY.
Job Description
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for maintaining the council’s public image and brand through a wide variety of marketing and communications initiatives. Provides communications counsel to senior management, helping to enhance the organization’s success by applying proactive and reactive communications strategy. Provides the public relations and overall media relations plans for the council. Creates programs that positively position the council and BSA with the public and align closely with marketing campaigns to reinforce the BSA message.

Primary focus:
• 50% membership growth and retention
• 20% fundraising support
• 20% other marketing support including positive publicity/general brand building and events
• 10% camp promotion

Responsibilities:
• Marketing plan – develop an annual marketing plan that prioritizes objectives, strategies and tactics and that promises specific outcomes in return for requested investment levels
• National alignment – align local council marketing initiatives in support of BSA National’s marketing priorities; leverage BSA National’s council campaigns and related assets
• Brand management – make sure all council marketing and communications are in alignment with national BSA brand standards
• Website – responsible for maintaining a council website that is professional, aesthetically pleasing, aligned with national brand standards and that promotes BSA, the council and its activities including its camp(s). The website should include a large number of promotional images and videos and persuasive marketing copy. And it should entice and invite youth and adults to participate in the program. Website management includes using Google Analytics, or similar measurement program, to improve the user experience and the intended outcomes.
• Membership support – provide marketing support for the membership function year-round
• Staff – assist all council staff members in developing professional, brand-aligned communication materials
• Volunteers – help build and serve as staff support for the council marketing committee bringing in the knowledge, connections and skill sets necessary for successful council marketing efforts, including cross-functional alignment between marketing, membership, program, finance volunteers and staff. Educate and empower districts and units to tell their positive stories through local media as well as through their own social media channels.
• Social media – create fresh, strong and constantly updated council presence on Facebook, Instagram, Tik-Tok and other popular social media platforms, utilizing a blend of organic and paid/promoted social media posts.
• Newsletter - create and publish council newsletters.
• Proactive publicity – identify and implement events and other initiatives that can generate significant positive publicity for BSA

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Reports to council Scout Executive
Manages a budget of (5% of council revenues)
Compensation for this position will determined by past experience.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, graphic design, web management, or related field.
• 5-10+ years-experience in marketing roles

Proficient:
• Written communication (collateral material copy, press releases, blog posts, articles for publications and speech writing)
• Content creation and story-telling ability
• Public and media relations (including building and maintaining relationships with reporters, journalists, editors and other media personnel)
• Graphic design including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign)
• Expertise with social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter including competence in the design, placement, and measurement of demographically targeted and geo-targeted paid promotional campaigns.
• Email marketing best practice including measurement and segmentation.
• Microsoft Excel
• Microsoft PowerPoint
• Customer insight
• Out-of-the box thinking
• Quick at finding the marketing/communication angle that will work
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to self-motivate and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Marketing project management experience is a must - since there'll be so many balls to juggle and little time for do-overs.
Working knowledge:
• SurveyMonkey or other online survey platforms
• Marketing automation including HubSpot or related tools
• Video production such as Adobe Premiere Pro or similar video editing programs
• Adobe Creative Cloud products, especially InDesign and Photoshop
• WordPress CMS
• Event planning and management
• Vendor management - bidding, contracting and delegating marketing materials such as collateral, ad placement, display banners, etc., for production
• Prior knowledge/understanding of the Boy Scouts of America program useful, but not required.
